The History of
Calstock Parish |
|
Visitors to Calstock Parish, no matter how they arrive, usually end up on the quayside of Calstock Town, and from that moment they are not only in the heart of Calstock, but in the heart of the beautiful Tamar valley as well. The scenery around them was formed long before mankind ever arrived in Britain. How this scenery was created is explained in the booklet A Guide to Calstock which deals with various aspects of Calstock Town, not the parish. The history of Calstock Parish involves a number of settlements, of which the main ones are Cotehele, Calstock Town, Gunnislake, Harrowbarrow, Metherell, Latchley, Chilsworthy, Albaston and St Anne’s Chapel. A number of smaller settlements have also existed since earlier times. These include Delaware, Dimson, Hatches, Todsworthy, Sandock, Coombe, Okel Tor and Danescombe to name but a few. The story of these place names, and many others are told in a booklet. The Place Names of Calstock Parish A comprehensive collection of materials exists in the Calstock Parish Archives A flourishing Calstock Parish Local History Group exists. The story of man’s activities in the parish are briefly told in three stages:- |
